Young Horse World Championships for Video, 90 minutes [Note: full two hours], $49.95 Here's your chance to improve your eye for conformation and for good horses, in general. Watch the world's best young superstars showing their talent in a 90-minute [Note: the video is a full two-hours] videotape from Kyra Beth Houston of Dressage un Ltd -- Dressage.com -- filmed at the 2002 Young Horse World Championships in Verden, Germany. The video features the complete tests of the top five rides in both the 5 and 6 year old divisions. Watch as the elegant Dr. Ulf Möller rides Don Davidoff 2 to win the 5 year old class. Then the lovely Poetin 2 wins the 6 year old class. [Poetin is shown competing as a 5 year old in 2002 and placed 5th. She returned to compete in 2003 as a 6 year old, won the championship with 10 for trot. She sold at auction for a record auction price for a dressage horse of 2 million Euros (over $3,000,000 US). The 6 year old class was extremely close with returning champion Rubels and reserve champion Wanesco finishing 1, 2.] You can see why the judges unanimously agreed to give Diamond Hit a 10 for his canter - the only 10 given in the entire competition. During the introduction to the video, the names of riders from each country represented are given along with the horse's breed and pedigree. In voice-over, FEI "O" judge Volker Moritz explains the requirements and movements for the 5 and 6 year old classes. He says that the requirements for 5 year old horses check and evaluate the basic gaits a horse needs to become an international Grand Prix dressage, jumping or event competition horse. Final evaluation marks are given to the horse for trot, canter, walk, suppleness, contact, obedience, rideability and their willingness for collection. A general impression mark is also added to the final score. Moritz says that the mark the judges give for general impression means that the correct stages of the training scale are shown and that the horse shows the ability for higher levels of dressage. The requirements for the 6 year old class are a little higher. The test asks for a higher degree of collection, introducing movements such as shoulder-in, half pass in trot and flying changes. Five general marks are also given in the end, as was done with the 5 year old class. Following the rides, marks for each horse are shown, and you can listen as the judge (in English) evaluates each horse. This makes the video a really educational experience for the viewer. This video not only gives viewers a better understanding of what breeding judges are looking for, but it also will inspire you to look at horses more critically the next time you go to a show.
