A Friend’s Lament
In Memory of My Friend, Theo.

Pharaoh (as recited to Josie Whitman)

I stand and look, but do not see,
Oh where oh where can my friend be.
I whinnie then neigh, there’s no reply,
And others cannot tell me why.

I know, I look in our special place,
But of my friend, there’s still no trace.
Perhaps they’ve left him in his stall,
I look, but there is empty wall.

The woods I search, and on the trail,
And even the wash rack rail.
He’ll be back; he’ll know the time,
When we all hear the dinner chime.

Alas, my friend you must be lost,
We’ll post rewards at any cost.
And when night falls, we will all pray,
That soon to home you’ll find your way.

Until that time, again face to face,
In that field where we love to race,
I’ll hold your memory so very dear,
Close in my heart, please have no fear.

I’ll not forget the times we shared,
The times we played, the times we cared,
The gentle breezes, the light rain mist,

And the mornings we were both sun-kissed.
