Goldstern
Goldstern, Klaus Balkenhol's police horse who won Olympic gold at Barcelona and Atlanta, as well as an individual bronze at Barcelona, has died of colic at the age of 22. Goldstern's freestyle at World Cup is still considered one of the best ever freestyles. The partnership between Klaus and Goldstern was a joy to see. While on police duty, Klaus and Goldie would work on dressage movements on the wooded trails in Dusseldorf. Goldstern was retired in Klaus' care and given to Klaus in lieu of a gold watch when Klaus retired from the police department. Goldie has lived a luxurious life with daily turnout and a stall in the barn attached to Klaus's home.
