Now and
Forever
Bernie Kahn
28 Oct 2001
Breezes whispered under clear blue,
Warm and lovely day, ever soft,
Grass still communion for horses,
Sweet, moist, fragrant green.
My wonderful friend, my brother,
Still strong and vital despite years past 30,
Was now in pain, exhausted, worried
That he might go down and never rise.
His eyes were tired, for he had no rest,
Many days since he last laid down,
Too many days with no ease or comfort,
No doctor left any shred of hope.
He greeted me, rubbing his head on me,
Eyes pleading, trusting, loving,
For we twenty years were joined
In joy, harmony, and love.
Favorite treats were given,
Much loved places rubbed and scratched,
Nose to nose, breath to breath,
Two hearts sing for one last hour.
I led him from his stall forever,
We said goodbye to his pasture mate,
Slow painful walk out of the barn forever,
His friend's calls echoing, unrequited.
Out to graze, as the sun moved west,
The air still warm, the horse shining
As he tasted the sweet green,
Standing with dignity, equine wonder.
The sun was setting as the vet drew near,
Shakily I agreed it was time,
A parting kiss and a promise unspoken,
We eased him out of his pain, forever.
He went gently, bathed in love,
Surrounded by friends that warm lovely day,
Fierce joy, his life well lived,
May his sweet soul gently graze, forever.
