Defenders

NYC, DC, PA
September 11, 2001
A tribute to
each Defender of Freedom on September 11, 2001.
Give Blood at any Red Cross office.
"Ky - I too have been
watching in in horror this morning as this is unfolding. The only thing I
can think of to do at the moment is to make an appointment to give blood.
There is (according to Peter Jennings) a shortage in the blood supply. I
urge everyone to do the same. Jodi"
I
hope we hear from Bernie who works in NYC. I reached my husband, Eli,
by email but couldn't get through on the phone.

lives and works in NYC. I emailed him and just got this:
After this morning's events in downtown Manhattan, just wanted to let all
know I'm okay. Now safe at home, after many hours of walking.
The World Trade Center is (was) 2-3 blocks from my office.

I also am
aware of those brave police, fire and medical personnel, rushing to aid the
victims of the crashes, then caught in the collapse of the buildings.
May they not be forgotten. To those, and their brethren who still labor on
this, I can only humbly bow in respect, and offer thanks, and prayers.

7 World Trade Center collapsed about 5:30 pm; it is across the street from
my office.
I am greatly saddened, grieving, and very angry. Especially lost for me is
that the plaza of the Towers was the place I went to for all those wonderful
summertime concerts at lunch and after work (see post "Not Fade
Away"); now gone forever.
Yet in the face of all this ugly evil, I know that to preserve and assert
our humanity, the answer must be to create and aspire towards something of
beauty and harmony. Dressage can be one of those things.
Among other disconnected contemplations today, I wonder how many of those
lost today were horse folk. All those companions - horses, dogs, cats -
waiting, for their person, who will never come home again forever.
Please hug your horses for me.

I find myself sad for all the children, pets, family who lost their people.
I have not found any anger in myself yet I think the sad has filled me
beyond any other feelings. It doesn't shock me that this has happened.
America is filled with super people and we'll get through this and continue
to grow in strength.....I would not want to lose one bit of the freedom we
have here and I'm not going to let some madmen change the way I feel about
living my life.

Dear all,
I am French American, having chosen to become American a couple of years
ago. Because I do have 30 off year of Frenchness in me , I sometimes get
into "pissing" contest about food and wine and culture, America
vs. Europe. Etec. But I never regret my choice, because I love, love this
land. Yesterday, I witnessed the essence of what makes America great: its
people. Kyra, your story about the hostages probably managing to crash the
plane to save Camp Davis just choked me. I am SO PROUD to be an AMERICAN and
I hope we can keep the unity we find in catastrophic events and render
justice not to avenge ourselves but to protect our land and our people from
further assaults. Only then can we have peace.

Hello Bernie:
It is of great relief to read that you are here to write about this horrific
attack.
I was just finishing the final touches to bring the Florida Omnibus to the
printer, as I saw on CNN the unfolding of the attack. At first, I figured
that it was an advertisement for a science fiction movie. Finally, I
realized that this was REAL.
I've had to sit down, my knees went weak, the second time in my life. The
first time was, as my oldest son passed away ( Sergeant First Class / Master
Gunner, U.S. Army). I've received calls from my other 3 children (WA, NC,
Germany). We were all in shock.
I've received many calls, asking for advice to get judges to dressage shows
for this weekend. Planes are not flying, judges can not get to shows. The
NEDA show had to cancel their CDI portion; because they had no judges, etc.
USA Equestrian is waving many rules for this weekend to accommodate the
shows and participants.
The stars and striped flag is flying at my house, draped with a black
ribbon.
Please forgive my grammar. Your german friend,
Klaus Fraessdorf
They played Garth Brooks' song today that he had written after the Oklahoma
bombing, and it set me off crying for probably the first time since this has
all happened. I sang along heartily, and pledged that I would follow its
lead.
"I hear them saying, "You'll never change things,
No Matter what you do it's still the same thing."
But it's not the world that I am changing...
I do this so
The world will know
That it cannot change me....
Do all the good you know how to do, one person at a time and stay the way
you are. Only by getting us to stoop to their level do they win!
