Amiga
June 12, 2001

This is my 4th
entry in this folder since last September. It has been a very sad year.
Last Tuesday I had to say goodbye to Amiga, due to complications of Cushings
disease.
Some of you may remember my dilemma in Sept '99 of whether to adopt her. Due
to family circumstances, her owner had to relocate from Connecticut to
Florida and could no longer care for her. I took her in as she was the dam
of my gelding Majestad.
Less than a year later she was diagnosed with Cushings and it has been an
emotional roller coater ride since last May. In April she looked so good
you'd never guess she was turning 21, then about 6 weeks ago she started
declining until last week when she just said she was hurting too much to
fight anymore.
Amiga was a stately, sweet, Andalusian. She had big, soft brown eyes and the
longest eyelashes I've ever seen. I had always preferred geldings but this
gal crept into my heart. Her passing is hitting me harder than the other
oldsters I've had to put down-maybe because I feel that she should have had
more years left. These days 21 is not old for a horse that was well cared
for. In spite of the ache I feel, I'm glad I was able to take her in. She
had been an "only" horse for the 13 years before I got her-a
dearly loved pet. It tore her owner apart to have to give her up but she
wanted what was best for Amiga. With me she got to be a horse again and
really bonded to my gelding Cody and I believe had a happy life.
Whenever I look at Majestad I will see her-and that helps a little.
