Conrad Schumacher Arrives

9/14 Conrad Schumacher, Ellen Bontje’s personal trainer, arrived this week in Horsley Park. Gestion Silvano is now in full training under Conrad’s watchful eye. Besides Ellen, Conrad is training several other Olympic riders. He is the official trainer of the British team, among which includes Carl Hester and Richard Davison. Two other students Conrad will be training at the Games are Antonio Rivera, individual for Mexico and Heike Holstein, individual for Ireland.

Sjef: ”I have seen Ellen schooling Silvano and I think this combination is doing very well. During this week Flim Flam, America’s Number one horse, seems to be very fresh and happy in practice with Susan Blinks. There are moments of brilliant work by this pair. It’s a delight to see her again as she was training for a couple of months at Anky’s stables in the past. I also caught glances of the 2001 World Cup sponsor, Dr. Jorge. Dr. Jorge is an individual for Brazil being trained by Marietta Almassy. Marietta is head rider at Dr. Jorge’s stable in Sao Paolo, the site of the World Cup 2001. Marietta was unfortunately not picked to ride for France, but is here at the Games as a trainer."

Playing Golf

9/14 Today Anky, Sjef and Jürgen Koschel went to play golf at the River Side Oaks Club. Rob Hanna, husband of Australian dressage team rider Mary Hanna, accompanied them. They were invited by the owner of the Club to play 18 holes. The Club and grounds, which has held the PGA Championships, were fantastic. Sjef:” I have played at most of the world’s golf clubs and I have never seen such a beautiful clubhouse. The front nine holes were easy; the back nine was a different story. It took quite a while to finish them due to wind, which made us very tired. Regularly we used our golf carts and bags as shields from our own incoming golf balls. I think the owner of the Golf Club might want to think twice before he invites us again.”

Saturday Night Barbeque

9/14 The Dutch team will celebrate the Opening of the Games with a barbecue this Saturday night. Almost everyone is an attendance now so this was a good excuse for a party. Except Jos Lansink the whole Dutch jumping team has arrived now. Jos is arriving in Sydney the 19th, right after the Zangersheide yearly show this weekend. George De Jong, manager of the Dutch Federation and also ‘Chef de Mission’ for the Dutch equestrian delegation and Jumping Team Coach Johan Heins will also be present. Frank Garritsen is sweating over his job to cater the barbecue. But they have faith in their master cook and they know it will be a success. They expect 40 people all together, who are also all invited to have a golf lesson before the barbecue.

Anky Bottle Feeds a Baby Kangeroo

9/14 Anky had the privilege today to bottle feed a six months old baby kangaroo. This was a child of a tamed Ridgeback kangaroo (big size), which unfortunately died. So the orphan has to be raised by humans in captivity. Anky met the baby kangaroo’s new parents through mutual friends of the past boat ride from Sunday. These people have used a bag to recreate his mother’s pouch. They carry him around and bottle-feed him every four hours. Today Anky had the honor to act as mother.
