Sydney 2000

 Judges' Individual Marks
As Shown on Official Sydney Video

  • Judges' individual marks for each competitor by movement have been available since World Equestrian Games in Rome.

  • Grand Prix
15 of the 47 Grand Prix rides are shown in excerpts, usually the best movements.  Germany won the team gold medal, Netherlands team Silver and USA barely edged Denmark for the team Bronze -- won by the very last ride, Christine Traurig and Etienne.  Bonfire finished second to Gigolo, with Ferro third, Farbenfroh fourth, Chacomo fifth.

  • Grand Prix Special
9 of 25 Grand Prix Special rides are shown in excerpts. The top 15 riders with the highest combined scores from the Grand Prix and the Grand Prix Special advanced to the Freestyle EXCEPT only three riders per country could advance.  Both the Netherlands and Germany had all four of their competitors in the top 15.  Germany's Ulla Salzgeber and Alexandra Simmons de Ridder were tied with identical point totals after the GP and GPS.  The Chef d'Equipe had to determine which rider would advance to the Freestyle and possibly which rider would win an individual medal.

  • Grand Prix Freestyle
8 of the 15 Grand Prix Freestyle rides are shown, four in excerpts and the top five in total without commentary during the ride.  Anky van Grunsven and Bonfire WON their individual gold medal with a record setting 86.05% -- they danced!  Isabell Werth and Gigolo won the silver and Ulla Salzgeber and Rusty -- with ice water in their veins -- won the bronze after their CD quit midway through the freestyle.  They were allowed to return after the other riders and finish their freestyle from the point where the music quit.

  • Thanks to Margaret Freeman, here's a sample of Sydney marks:
In glancing through the marks, I don't see any 10s in the Grand Prix and
Grand Prix Special (lots of 9s, though). In the freestyle, Bonfire has a 10
(Volker Moritz, Germany) and four 9s for the piaffe/passage transitions, a 10 (Jan Peeters, Netherlands), three 9s and an 8 for the right canter pirouette and a 10 (Jan Peeters, Netherlands), two 9.5s  and two 9s for music. He also had three 5s in the collected walk and a 4 from Eric Lette, Sweden, on the extended walk. Rusty had a 10 (Jan Peeters, Netherlands), one 9 and three 8s for the one tempis.
