Filling the Trough©

A near empty water trough,
Greeted me in the pasture.
Full in the softness of morning,
Now desolate in the early summer’s heat.

I blessed it with coolness,
Running slow from a hose.
Watching patiently
As it returned to its purpose.

Supervising hoofs stood by,
Chestnut coat dust blurred,
Hiding burnished sunsets,
And majesties within.

We chatted while waiting,
His withers scratched,
My neck nuzzled,
Exchanging views on the day.

Co-workers out for a friendly drink,
At a favorite neighborhood tavern.
Sharing misfortunes and injustices
Speaking of how the world should run.

Years this pasture stood empty;
Now again married to horses.
The copper horse and I listened,
Softly hearing pasture’s purr.

Tall grasses moving,
Revealing as the slithering of a cat’s tail,
To the mood of the meadow.
Fulfilled by horses as trough by water.
