Behind the Scenes at Jerez 2002 WEG

7/27 Found Cartujan Horses
Jerez is a lovely town in the south of Spain, near the Mediterranean coast.  The people are friendly, life is good, the horses are beautiful and have the best temperament. Each one I met at the stud farm today immediately came to be petted.

This is my first visit to Jerez for the pre-production trip for Dressage un Ltd's videos of World Equestrian Games in September. I flew to Madrid and then to Jerez on Iberian airlines, picked up a rental car, diesel and standard transmission at the airport and found my way to the hotel on the wide and beautiful main street, Alcade Alvaro Domecaq.

7/28 Spanish Tapas
After my afternoon siesta, computer time and then it was after 9 p.m., time for dinner at the Tapas Bar. 9:30 p.m. and I am one of the first, with now all of the tables on the patio. It doesn't get dark until after 10 and the temperature was pleasant. A bbq grill was set up and a senior gentleman's sole job for the evening was to carefully grill fresh anchovies which were skewered on cane spits and fit into slots in front of the bank of coals. The fresh grilled anchovies were extremely popular. Couples old and young, families with infants and children arrived between 10:30 and 11 p.m.,  filling every table.
7/28 Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art
After breakfast, I decided to explore the area around the hotel by foot. The Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art is only 1 1/2 blocks away. Two mounted police were standing in the street near the school. The school is closed on weekends, but what I could see through the gates is gorgeous. The school is in the 19th Century Palacio Duque de Abrantes, designed by the French architect, Garnier, who also designed the Paris Opera and the Montecarlo Casino. Trees from South America and the Indies beautify the spacious grounds.

Final Preparations of the Stadium
Arrived in Jerez with cameras and all the video editing computer gear. Rental car upgraded to an Opel Zaphir van -- big enough to carry our crew and equipment. Televisions had been delivered at the arena and our booth is the best.

Met the US team at Accreditation. Debbie McDonald, Lisa Wilcox and Guenter Seidel arrived on Saturday and the horses were flying in last night.

Police security is in force. .....

Camera Crew Not on the Flight
Monday was a challenging day as Wendy took our minivan to Seville to pick up the rest of our crew scheduled to arrive about noon. They were not on the flight. Frantic phone calls on our international cell phones (only $2 per minute).....
