Viva España!
Royal Spanish Riding School at the CHIO

The atmosphere is tense, the visitors speak quietly and expectantly to each other. Then the music starts, bringing the audience to the Feria-grounds of Jerez. Six Caballeros ride in with hot-blooded Senoritas, dressed in colourful flamenco-dresses, sitting behind them on the horse. The horses are saddled “à la vaquero”, that is the typical Spanish shepherd-saddle. “Como bailan los caballos andaluces”. Once each week the stallions of the “Real Escuela Andaluza del Arte Equestre” put a spell on the visitors at the estate of the Duques of Abrantes in the Spanish Jerez de la Frontera with their world-wide unique knowledge of Dressage – but in June the hot-blooded Spaniards will dance in the Soers. The highlight of the performance is the traditional quadrille and the great exercises above the earth. The “Real Escuela” will be one of the main attractions at the World Equestrian Festival – CHIO Aachen 2001, from June 12th to the 17th.

“We are glad to be able to give our spectators a chance to see the Royal Spanish Riding School from Jerez”, says Frank Kemperman, manager of the Aachen-Laurensberger Rennverein (ALRV). The appearance of the “Real Escuela” is part of the cooperation between the ALRV and the organisers of the World Equestrian Games 2002 in Jerez de la Frontera, which will take place in September next year. The complete program of the “Real Escuela Andaluza del Arte Equestre” will be presented during the Opening Ceremony on Tuesday evening. Individual special features of their program will be shown at several different occasions throughout the entire week of the event in the Jumping Stadium and in the Deutsche Bank Dressage Stadium.

The riding school was founded by Don Alvaro Domecq, who learned his trade at the Royal Spanish Riding School in Vienna. His riding school works at the goal of preserving and promoting the classical art of equestrian sport, the promotion of tourism and the training of riders. It supports the training of special equestrian handicraft-education such as blacksmith, saddle-maker and carriage-builder. They have also started training riders, aimed at competing at international dressage events.

Since its inauguration in 1987, King Juan Carlos is Honorary President of the riding school, which is guided by the Technical Director Ignacio Ramblas Algarin. Currently there are 90 horses, 4 master riders, 7 riders, 2 candidate riders and 16 apprentices on the estate.
