Grand Prix Special continued
Saturday, July 15

Rusty got a 10 in the special on movement # 24.

Lisa Wilcox (USA) riding the ten year old German Oldenburg breeding stallion, Rohdiamant, by Rubenstein, earned their spot in the final freestyle competition with a 67.44%. A not quite square halt a bit heavy in the hand earned only 6s but the extended trot across the diagonal floated with two 8s and three 7s. This is certainly an elegant pair who have a shot at Jerez for the World Equestrian Games in 2002. The walk is straight, four beat, relaxed and striding and was rewarded by the judges with four 9's and an 8. A nice transition trot to passage offset a break in the extended trot to canter. Swinging haunches on the piaffe brought 6s, major mistakes in the 1s brought 4s, extended canter 7s and one 8, second canter pirouette improved from 6s to 7s and one 8, the final extended trot brought 7s and 8s.
Collective marks: 8777, 8767, 8767, 8777, 7868.

Carrie Schopf (USA) and Ikhtisas, an 11 year old bay Holsteiner mare, who competed in two USET qualifiers in Florida with scores high enough to make the final selection trials, but decided to not travel to Florida, finished the Grand Prix in 19th place with 67.36% just behind fellow American Lisa Wilcox on Rohdiamant. Carrie and Ikhtisas followed Rusty and in comparison were not as expressive or rhythmic. Attention to details beginning with a square halt that earned 7s and 8s countered weaker movements such as the extended trot that was a bit irregular and earned 6s. Carrie is an elegant rider who sits just not quite as deep as Ulla and the top German riders. Piaffe, passage and the transitions in and out are Ikhtisas' strongest movements earning 8s. Improvement in the canter pirouettes (mostly 6s) and the extended trot could bring their scores to near 70s. The pair put in a very credible performance especially in this competition with the best in the world German team, top five are 75%+ and top ten are 70%+.

Beatriz Ferrer Salat (Spain) and Vital Robert Beauvalais finished tenth with a 70.98% which would have placed them much higher in most other competitions. The thirteen year old Hanoverian by Bolero has a lovely extended trot that just floats in front correctly powered by the hind quarters.

Rudolf Zeilinger and Livijno finished in 11th, just barely below 70% with a 69.77. Rudolf tried to go all out with the eleven year old, bay Hannoverian gelding by Lysander and made a few mistakes. Their ride was very nice with 6s and 7s and the occasional 8, but just not good enough compared to the top German team. The German second team would still beat most other nations.

Michael Klimke and White Foot began with an elegant, slow salute while the rain began and continued throughout their ride. Michael showed some of the German precision, hitting the mark exactly and going deep into the corners, a change right at F, canter pirouette right on the mark. But a bit sloppy (barely off the line) piaffe and passage, too many flying changes on the centerline earned this lovely ride only 12th place with a 69.67% and the comment: Oh, it's not very good. Another German second team member who could beat most other nations.

Collectives: 7778, ----, 8778, 7767, 8878.

Imke Bartles (NED) and Barbria, a seventeen year old Dutch Warmblood mare, started their ride in pouring down rain with a halt that earned 8s and 7s. A mistake in the twos and a missed change behind in the ones resulted in a couple of 5s to bring their score down to only 67.81% -- the Dutch second team like the Germans, could beat most other nations. The rain stopped as they finished their ride.

Hubertus Schmidt and My Fair Lady appropriately rode in bright sunshine with soft background music from what else but "My Fair Lady". The eleven year old bay Westfalen mare by Monte Carlo finished in 9th with a 72.70%. Straight 8s on extended trot, and even 9s on movement 6 were offset by 6s on piaffe / passage with a bit of sideways swing and an error in the one tempis which brought 4s.

Collectives: 8778, 8768, 8778, 8888, 8979.

Daniel Ramseier and Parvenue Royal will probably represent Switzerland at Sydney. The thirteen year old, chestnut Westfalen stallion, performed in bright sunlight instead of pouring down rain. Royal has an expressive passage and extended trot although the transitions could be improved. Another top horse who has kept his walk, straight, nice big correct walk earned two 9s, two 8s and a 7 from the judges. Royal is a big, powerful, strong, expressive stallion with presence who has some exceptional, exciting movements, but then gets a bit sloppy and loses many points. You can easily see the definition in the muscles in his hind quarters. He is a bit like an Arnold Swartznagger, muscles that might be a bit more suited for a weight lifter than for a dancer.

Collective Marks: 7656, 657?, 8767, 8657, 7766.

Emile Faurie on Tiamo Trocadero, a thirteen year old German chestnut stallion, was just not as precise as the Germans. Lack of attention to details such as transitions right at the letter, half pass a little crooked at the beginning, then straightened out, kept this pair just out of the 60% mark, not even close to the 67.44% cutoff for advancing to the final freestyle competition. A casual ride won't score against this high level of international competition.
