Mary M. Smith, a dressage instructor in Florida,  spent a month riding at the Reitinstitut Egon von Neindorff.  This is her series of reports.

The School

The school is located in Karlsruhe, Germany.  It really is in the center of town, only a block from the city hospital (Stadt. Klinikum) and bordered by apartments.  If it didn't have a silhouette of a dressage horse and rider on the street side of the building, one would never guess that there were horses anywhere near.

When you enter the gate, and walk down the cobblestone drive around to the back, however, the first thing you pass on your right is the horse entrance to the "big hall", the main indoor riding arena. If you look left, you see the secondary riding hall, which is a metal half-round building reminiscent of old army barracks. As you keep walking straight ahead, you will walk straight into the stable area. The building is basically "L" shaped with the Big Hall, offices, locker area, and a few stallion stalls making up the small end of the L and the stabling for the rest of the horses making up the long end of the L. There is also a second riding hall, mentioned earlier, and an outdoor riding area, which is roughly twice the size of the second hall.

Every square inch of the property is utilized. Herr von Neindorff lives on the second story of the school, above the horses, with his dog, Nina. There were also some stalls on the back side of the "L" (about 8) which were erected about 20 years ago as temporary....only to be there for a few months....but they were utilized for 20 years, and were torn down in the 3rd week that I was at the school. They are planning to build new stalls immediately.
